Moses Cleaveland letter to Joseph Brant, 1796 May 26.

Autograph letter signed from Moses Cleaveland to Capt. Joseph Brant informing him that Cleaveland has been appointed to begin the survey and settlement of lands in the Connecticut Western Reserve. Cleaveland expresses his willingness to act honorably and honestly and requests a meeting be convened at Buffalo Creek. The letter is dated 26 May 1796 from "La Canandaigua" and may be a draft, as it includes several corrections in the handwriting of Cleaveland.

The Connecticut Land Company (1795-1809) was a syndicate of 35 groups representing 58 individuals who purchased on credit the majority of Connecticut's Western Reserve land as a speculative venture.
